Hot Honey Coconut and Guava Margarita

My love of entertaining in the backyard means I’m always happy to have another margarita to offer, especially one that feels a little like a tropical vacation. Guava and coconut make this one deliciously indulgent, but it’s the hot honey that gives it a little mischief. You get sweetness, a gentle kick and that wonderful toasted-coconut rim before the first sip is even finished. I’ve kept the Mexican tequila-and-lime foundation and dressed it for a sunny afternoon of American backyard entertaining. Hand me a glass, find me a comfortable chair, and I’m quite happy to stay awhile.

Mary’s Introduction

Hot Honey Coconut and Guava Margarita combines tropical guava and creamy coconut with the bright lime and tequila foundation of a classic margarita. Hot honey adds customizable sweetness and heat, while the toasted-coconut rim brings aroma, texture and a nutty finish to every sip.

Why These Flavors Work

Sweet tropical guava and rich cream of coconut soften the bright acidity of fresh lime, while tequila and orange liqueur provide the familiar structure of a margarita. Hot honey adds a sweet heat that contrasts with the cool drink, and toasted coconut reinforces the tropical flavor with a nutty aroma and crisp texture.

Chef Notes

  • Watch the coconut closely while toasting because sweetened coconut can brown quickly.
  • Begin with 1 teaspoon of hot honey in the cocktail and add the second teaspoon only if more sweetness and heat are desired.

Recipe Guidance

Storage

Refrigerate any prepared noncarbonated base in a sealed container and keep it separate from ice and garnishes. For the best flavor, assemble the margaritas the day they are served.

Reheating

Do not reheat this cocktail. Serve it thoroughly chilled; if a prepared base has separated, shake or stir it before measuring over fresh ice.

Make Ahead

Mix the liquid base ahead and refrigerate it. Prepare glass rims and garnishes shortly before serving so they remain fresh and the rims do not become wet.

Serving Suggestions

Serve over fresh ice in prepared glasses, with the hot honey element balanced to each guest's preference. Pair with salty appetizers or grilled foods.
